Cleveland library awarded Family Place certification; announces chicks, outreach and new programs

Miss Mary, a library staff member, told the Parks and Recreation Commission that the library has received Family Place Library certification and outlined a multi-month outreach calendar and regular children’s programming. “We were officially given our Family Place Library banner,” Mary said, describing a training she and a colleague attended and a COVID-related delay before final certification.
The library runs weekly story times and themed programs: “the little explorers on Monday,” music-and-movement on Tuesday, “the little adventurers” on Thursday and a homeschool gathering, Mary said. She said the library recently hatched chicks for a children’s display and instructional activity: “We just hatched our chicks, so we can egg the chick.” Mary said the chicks will be at the library “for about a month.”
Mary described additional outreach and events the library will support: a family night at Shepherd Intermediate School, the city’s Taste of Cleveland at the Civic Center and an early learning conference at the CISD administration office. She also noted an outside volunteer started a chess program at the library that grew from six participants to about 20. “We started off with 6 people. We’re now up to 20,” Mary said.
Mary told commissioners a Medicare education class is in development but that a firm date has not been set. She said the program will be educational rather than a sales event. Regarding the summer reading program and animal visits, Mary said the library expects those visits to return but did not provide a specific date.
