Oak Harbor Garden Club launches Trex Challenge, readies May plant sale

Kathy Chalfant of the Oak Harbor Garden Club updated the commission on the club’s spring activities, including a Trex Challenge to collect non-city-recyclable plastics, a plant sale on Saturday, May 10, scholarships, and collaboration on Arbor Day and seasonal plantings.
Chalfant said the Trex Challenge, which launched April 1, collects plastic wrap and other flexible plastics such as potting-soil bags and packaging film that the city’s bins do not accept; collection points include a community center, the Chamber of Commerce and the Main Street Association on Pioneer Way. “Our goal is to raise a thousand pounds in 1 year. And if we do, we will get a Trex bench, which we will donate to a park,” Chalfant said.
The club is hosting a plant sale May 10 from 9 a.m. to noon near the park and the pickleball courts, offering hanging baskets, perennials and houseplants. Chalfant also said the club awarded two scholarships to high-school seniors, is providing grants to nonprofits and businesses for beautification projects, and is working with parks staff on seasonal flower-pot plantings and Arbor Day activities at schools.
The Garden Club’s outreach and volunteer activities were noted by commissioners as helpful support for spring park and school events; the Parks department later asked for volunteers for the April 25 Arbor Day events at five elementary schools.
