BEXLEY, Ohio — The Bexley City Council voted to suspend the three‑reading requirement and adopt Ordinance 08-25 to allocate funding for public automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and to cover an increase in the city's liability and cyber insurance premium.
Ordinance 08-25 reappropriates $10,000 for purchase and installation of public AED units and appropriates $25,000 for a higher insurance premium at renewal. Council discussion clarified the two items are unrelated: the AED appropriation covers units and installation while the insurance appropriation funds a necessary premium payment.
Lee Nathans, a longtime local advocate for public access defibrillators, told the council the city will relaunch training and work with the fire department on locations and orientation. "Having the public access AEDs is gonna be wonderful, but having people know how to use them and be trained in CPR and know how to jump into action when someone experiences a sudden cardiac arrest is gonna be key," Nathans said during public comment.
The motion to suspend the three‑reading rule was made by Council Member Jessica Saad and seconded by Sam Marcelino; the motion and the adopting motion both passed on unanimous roll calls. Council members said Parks & Rec will coordinate installations and that training will begin in May.
