A staff presenter for the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) provided a recorded walkthrough of the Equity Data Toolkit, a public resource on HCAI’s website intended to help hospitals participate in the Hospital Equity Measures Reporting Program.
The presenter said the recording is “a user friendly guide to help healthcare professionals and stakeholders navigate HCAI's hospital equity data toolkit,” and described the toolkit as supplemental material to help hospitals identify disparities and develop targeted interventions. The walkthrough explains how hospitals can use the toolkit to collect standardized demographic data, screen for health-related social needs and create monitorable health equity plans.
The toolkit is organized into three main groups of resources, the presenter said: tools for collecting patient demographic data; tools for assessing health-related social needs such as food insecurity, housing and transportation; and tools for health equity planning and monitoring. The presenter noted the demographic-data resources include guidance on collecting race, ethnicity and language data, and on collecting sexual orientation and gender identity and disability data.
The walkthrough points users to a recording from the California Health and Human Services Agency’s Center for Data Insights and Innovation that outlines opportunities under the Hospital Equity Measures Program. The presenter also explained how the site organizes resources by type — state documents, webinars, guides and training tools — and showed the navigation path on the HCAI site under Data > Data and Reports > Social Impact, within the Hospital Equity Measures Reporting Program section.
HCAI’s presenter invited users to share feedback through the toolkit page to help the agency improve resources and technical assistance. “The Equity Data Toolkit is a public resource available on HCAI's website,” the presenter said.
The walkthrough functions as an explanatory guide; it does not record regulatory changes, vote outcomes, or new statutory requirements. The toolkit and the related recording are presented as reference materials for hospitals seeking to align data collection and planning with the Hospital Equity Measures Reporting Program.
