The LaSalle County Law and Justice Committee voted to approve a budget amendment moving $15,000 into the law library account to fund a self-represented litigant navigator, the committee learned at its meeting.
Laurie, identified in the meeting as court staff handling the request, told the committee the county had budgeted $30,000 in fiscal year 2024 for two part-time navigator positions but had overlooked including the amount in the fiscal year 2025 budget. "It's the self represented litigant navigator... They'll help them with forms, they'll help them with e-filing. It's a project that we've been trying to get in place for a couple years now and it's strictly civil cases," Laurie said. Laurie said the county had hired Rose Myers, formerly the jury coordinator, and that Myers started March 17; the office also received a $10,000 grant that will cover part of the navigator's salary.
Committee discussion focused on how much to place in the law library account for FY25; members agreed to fund $15,000 rather than the full $30,000 previously budgeted, and the committee approved the amendment by voice vote.
The committee also received routine monthly and quarterly reports from the state's attorney's office, circuit clerk, probation, detention home and finance staff. Highlights included the circuit clerk reporting collections paid to the county of $275,316 for the month and the detention home reporting total bills of $15,273.35 for the period.
The committee moved and approved a series of routine motions by voice vote: approval of the previous meeting minutes; acceptance and forwarding of departmental reports to the full board; and authorization to pay departmental bills for the detention home, state's attorney, public defender (absent), circuit clerk and judiciary probation. The detention home reported prepaid bills of $946.25 and total monthly bills of $15,273.35.
