The Senate Committee on Transportation and Culture and the Arts passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 38 and Senate Resolution 22 urging the County of Maui to prioritize development and planning of the northern terminus of the Kihei North–South Collector Road.
Rob Weltman and representatives of the Kihei Community Association testified that the collector road has been planned for nearly three decades but only two segments have been completed, and that finishing the northernmost connection to Veterans Highway would alleviate congestion and provide a critical additional ingress/egress for South Maui.
Why it matters: Testimony emphasized long delay in planning and the road’s role in reducing congestion and improving emergency access. The chair recommended passing the resolutions with technical, non-substantive amendments; the committee adopted the recommendation.
The resolutions urge the county to prioritize planning; they do not appropriate construction funds or set a state timetable. Committee action advances the request and signals legislative attention to a long-standing county planning need.
