Department heads report staffing, infrastructure and parks updates

Department heads gave the Common Council a series of operational updates on March 25 covering staffing, equipment maintenance and infrastructure projects.
Police Chief Gary (first name only in record) said three applicants will be interviewed by the Board of Works and that Officer Ewing has been released to solo evaluation in his field-training process. He also reported Sergeant Crabtree received a recognition award from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
Utilities staff reported work to relocate a water main to accommodate school construction on Radio Road and several recent lead-line replacements. Utility manager Mike Cook described maintenance work on the wastewater treatment headworks gate and demonstrated tools used to clean a force main, including a foam "pig" used to track and clear lines.
Parks and public-works staff said the new trail and skate park construction is progressing rapidly, that dugout and concrete work is underway ahead of an April tournament, and that restroom openings faced a minor delay due to winterization damage.
Other operational notes included fuel-station logistics tied to a county fueling arrangement, equipment deliveries (a bucket truck expected in June), fire-department equipment maintenance and staff training for certified fire investigators, and site restoration on a force-main project. No new ordinances or budget appropriations were proposed during the reports.
Several department heads asked councilmembers to follow up on operational questions outside the meeting; staff said they would provide additional dates and documentation as projects progress.
