The Martin County School Board voted March 20 to adopt school board policy 6560, the district’s retiree health‑insurance policy that applies to employees who retire by June 30, 2025. The motion to approve, moved by Mandy Roberts and seconded by Ms. Powers, passed unanimously.
The vote followed public comment from district employees, a teachers’ union representative and a student who urged the board not to change benefits for current employees. Union leader Matt Theobald told the board it was “a betrayal of trust” to change retiree health benefits for current staff, saying employees had already begun considering early retirement or leaving the district. Student Ian Hodges urged the board to preserve benefits so future students would continue to have experienced teachers.
