City Manager Gia Scruggs of Stonecrest marked Women’s History Month with a short personal reflection, saying the observance gives her a chance to "reflect on the accomplishments of women, specifically for me, African American women who have made a positive difference in what we do today."
Scruggs said female mentors in her life shaped her career, singling out the former city manager of Tallahassee as an example of an approachable leader and mentor who influenced her path. "The former city manager of the city of Tallahassee was the first female and longest serving city manager for, the city of Tallahassee and just watching what she was able to do and then also being very approachable and being a mentor is 1 of the things that has guided me throughout my career and my, path and journey to become a city manager myself," Scruggs said.
She told listeners to "remain true to your dreams" and not be afraid to forge their own paths, adding that she had turned many "no's" into positive outcomes. Asked to choose one word describing women in leadership, she chose "steadfast," explaining that the term reflects being "unwavering" and calm "in the midst of the storm." She concluded by identifying herself: "My name is Gia Scruggs. I'm the city manager, and I am Stonecrest proud."
