City staff says no local primary likely for Feb. 18; state-level contest could still require primary

City staff told the Oconomowoc Common Council on Jan. 7, 2025, that candidate filings for the Feb. 18 primary were current as of the 5 p.m. filing deadline and that no more than two candidates had filed for any aldermanic district, so the council need not decide that night whether to hold a local primary. Staff also told the council the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction may have a state-level race that would still require a February primary.
Gina Kozlak distributed an “aldermanic candidate updates” packet to council members and reported the filings as of the 5 p.m. deadline. “This is, I passed out the aldermanic candidate updates at yours, locations. And that is the filings current as of 5PM today, which is the deadline. So with no more than 2 candidates filing for any of the districts, there's no necessity for the council to decide tonight whether or not to have a local primary. But we do expect that the Department of, Public Instruction on the state level may have a race likely that will still necessitate a February primary,” Kozlak said.
No motion or formal council action was recorded on the local primary at the meeting; council members had no further questions at the time. City staff will monitor state-level filings and notify the council if further action or formal determination regarding a local primary becomes necessary.
