The Portage Common Council acknowledged two resignations and took interim steps to fill vacancies, confirming one appointment and electing a council member to a commission seat.
The council accepted notice that Alderson Dale Pedalinsic resigned from District 8. Council members said the mayor will solicit applicants; the council agreed to advertise a 30-day application window ending April 18 so a new mayor could vet candidates. The intent is to minimize the time the district sits without representation.
The council noted the resignation of Armen Shonchak from the Business Improvement District (BID) Board. The council then confirmed Eric Sluga (First Weber, owner-occupied downtown property) to the BID for a term through Dec. 31, 2027; the roll call vote recorded the appointment.
For the Plan Commission, Alderson Feeney nominated David Paul as the council’s representative for an interim period; Alderson Green seconded and the council elected Paul by roll call.
Council members discussed timing and noted that new mayoral and council members will be sworn in April 15, after which the mayor will recommend a final appointment for District 8. No special council motion was required to begin the solicitation; councilmembers instructed staff to proceed with public notice.
