Council backs reauthorization of state Knowles-Nelson stewardship funding

The Portage Common Council unanimously adopted a resolution supporting reauthorization of state funding for the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program.
Council member Mr. Sobiech presented the resolution, noting the city has received more than $500,000 from the program for local projects: $145,000 for resurfacing and landscaping at a new pavilion, $115,000 for Ice Age Trail improvements, $120,000 for rehabilitation of the Portage Canal and $81,000 for aquatic-weed-harvesting equipment on Silver Lake. He said the program, created in 1989 in honor of governors Warren Knowles and Gaylord Nelson, “has greatly benefited all municipalities in the state, particularly Portage.”
Alderson Green moved to adopt Resolution 205-6 in support of continued funding; Alderson Paul seconded. The roll call vote was recorded in the minutes and the resolution passed.
Council members said they expect to continue applying for stewardship grants and want to add the city’s name to the list of municipalities urging reauthorization.
