City utilities report multiple water-main breaks; crews worked extended hours, limited replacement work planned

During the Feb. 11 Board of Public Works and Capital Assets meeting, utility staff reported a cluster of water-main breaks that required extended crew work and immediate repairs.
A city staff member summarized the distribution report and said crews worked "30-plus hours" over two days to finish one break and move immediately to a nearby site on Chicago Road where another break occurred. The staff member said crews applied a stainless-steel clamp on Chicago Road and replaced a four-foot section of pipe on Fuchs Road where a bell joint prevented patching.
Staff described a pattern of spot corrosion and soil settlement near the repair sites; they noted a recently filled area with gravel for a neighboring horse farm and said they will coordinate with the landowner to address drainage and deposited material that may be affecting the line.
Utility staff said that, although the Chicago Road location has had multiple failures over time, the remainder of the system inspected looked "really good" and that replacements so far were targeted repairs rather than a system-wide emergency. Staff said the city is monitoring the affected area and has plans to replace trouble spots as needed; they did not announce any immediate large-scale replacement program.
The report drew board acknowledgement and was presented as part of the utilities distribution update during the regular meeting.
