The Franklin City Personnel Committee received a staffing report outlining open positions and recruitment challenges across departments.
Staff reported the city is actively recruiting for multiple CDL operator roles, and five candidates were invited for interviews earlier in the week with two responses expected to be interviewed. Police recruitment remains an area of need; staff said four police officer vacancies are open. Dispatching had two recent openings caused by a retirement and a resignation; staff said one position has been filled and another candidate has been selected.
The committee discussed the practical challenges of hiring for CDL roles. Staff noted that some hires may be brought on without a commercial driver’s license and then sent to training, but MATC and other providers have waiting lists and classes can take many months — in some reports up to a year — so the department may need to rely on in-house training and probationary timelines when feasible. Staff said the city has sometimes allowed hires to secure a CDL during the probationary period.
The committee briefly noted a new maintenance hire at the library and encouraged staff to continue outreach to fill hard-to-staff positions.
No formal actions were taken; the report was accepted for information and the committee moved to other items.
