Project manager Chuck Coates updated the board March 25 on the Matanzas High School addition, reporting that Building 5 received a certificate of occupancy and that the site’s chiller is commissioned and operating. Coates said technology installation, cameras and most furniture are complete for the new two‑story block, and that the media center, STEM lab and construction lab are ready or near ready for student use.
Coates displayed photos of typical classrooms, the second‑floor media breakout rooms, a STEM lab with new casework and TVs, and the construction shop. He noted that the Matanzas construction class has already moved into the new construction lab and that students participated in project‑site walkthroughs during construction; students also assembled some furniture components in the school’s woodshop.
The district reported owner direct purchase (ODP) savings on larger items, which Coates quantified as more than $176,000 in tax savings through direct procurement instead of contractor purchase and tax pass‑through. Punch‑list items remain, and staff said most are minor finish or control sequence items tied to air‑conditioning commissioning with Johnson Controls. The district said those items do not affect day‑to‑day operation and will be addressed during scheduled after‑hours punch‑list windows where necessary.
Board members asked about perimeter fencing and student safety; staff said the outdoor work area sits inside existing secured campus gates and will remain within campus security. A ribbon‑cutting event is being planned for the near future; staff recommended holding a board meeting at Matanzas so the public and board can view the space. The project manager and superintendent asked the board to provide a list of invitees for the ribbon cutting; former board members were suggested for inclusion.
Next steps: finish punch‑list items, complete final site work and coordinate a public ribbon cutting and board meeting at Matanzas. Staff said Building 10 classrooms vacated by construction moves will be renovated next week.
