The Newnan City Council voted to approve a demolition permit for the structure at 64 Wesley Street after a public hearing March 25.
City staff opened the hearing and said the property sits inside a Newnan historic district and that tax records date the building to about 1900. No one spoke in opposition during the public-comment portion of the hearing.
Property owner Elizabeth Mainsley of 9 Campbell told the council she owns the adjacent lot and that the current structure had troubled tenants and was “about to fall in.” Mainsley said she plans “to rebuild, hopefully,” and later clarified the replacement would likely be a single-family home rather than a duplex. Councilmembers moved and seconded approval; the motion carried.
The mayor asked how soon work could begin; staff replied demolition could start the next morning. The council did not place additional conditions on the demolition in the public record at the hearing.
The council handled the item as a public hearing with an opportunity for public comment, and then voted to grant the demolition permit.
