Life‑skills teacher praises student inclusion after readathon at Westwood Elementary

“My name is Joyce Walstead. And I work at the life schools program in Westwood Elementary with my co teacher Alex Fisher,” she said, and described how students who spend much of their time in specialized classrooms participated in the readathon with general‑education peers.
Walstead said the students “transitioned to new classrooms and environments they weren't familiar with, sat down to read and rotations with their general education peers. And they did this all with great behavior and engagement. It was great to see. This to me is a true example of inclusion,” she told the board, adding the progress would not have been possible earlier in the school year.
Board members acknowledged the comment and expressed appreciation for the update; no formal board action was taken during the public forum.
