Parks staff said the department will relocate to a leased office and storage building near the airport and consolidate multiple offsite storage units and trailers into one site.
Staff told the commission that the building — formerly leased by DOT during COVID and remodeled into offices — offered the cheapest option for the space needed and already has offices in place. The move is planned for May 1; staff said the city will sign a three‑year lease and budgeted roughly $900,000 for office remodel and tenant improvements. Staff said consolidating storage will allow the department to end roughly $1,700 per month in external storage rentals and centralize vehicles, trailers and event materials.
As part of the relocation plan, some staff will shift work locations: the recreation supervisor who manages sports programs will be based at Old Town Center to be closer to supervising staff, while other managers and coordinators will move into the new building. Staff said some outdoor containers will remain on site for overflow gear but that overall long-term costs should fall compared with multiple small leases.
Staff said the move is temporary while the city completes a new public works building and that the department will either relocate into the planned community center or new public works building when those options become available.
