Lowell subcommittee narrows K–8 ELA choices to three; staff will recommend top two to superintendent

The Curriculum Instruction Subcommittee of Lowell City heard an update on the district’s K–8 English language arts and literacy adoption process and on the teacher feedback that narrowed five vendor packages to three finalists: EL Education, American Reading Company and Core Knowledge/Amplify. Staff said they will package teacher feedback into a recommendation of a first and second choice for the superintendent.

The staff member leading the update said the adoption process followed an audit’s recommendations and incorporated teacher voice. “We had over 125 responses to that survey, and they narrowed it down from 5 programs to 3,” the staff member said. The three finalists later attended a curriculum fair on March 11 where teachers and coaches used a common rubric to evaluate presentations.

Why it matters: the district’s curriculum audit had identified gaps in grade-level alignment, balance of fiction and nonfiction, and coherence across grades.
