Fuquay Varina Police earn CALEA accreditation; department and two officers recognized

The Fuquay Varina Town Board on March 24 recognized two police officers for recent professional milestones and heard that the police department received national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
Police Chief Smith recognized Officer McClanahan for earning the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission Intermediate Law Enforcement Certificate and Officer Salvatore Fundero for earning a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University. Chief Smith noted the department uses a tuition reimbursement program for staff development and said 19 officers hold the intermediate certificate and 27 officers hold the advanced certificate.
Chief Smith told the board the department completed an 18-month process and that the CALEA commission voted unanimously in Garden Grove, California, to accredit the Fuquay Varina Police Department. He said the department is now working toward the comparable North Carolina state accreditation (NCLEA) and that the achievement is “a milestone.” Board members congratulated the officers and the department.
Officer Fundero's degree follows prior service with the New York Police Department; Officer McClanahan previously served with Appalachian State University campus police. The recognitions were presented during the employee recognition portion of the agenda; the board offered thanks and photos for the honorees.
