Sheriff honors deputies with life-saving awards after jail suicide attempt

The Newaygo County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 8 heard a presentation from the sheriff’s office recognizing a group of deputies whose prompt response and medical care revived a detainee who attempted suicide in a jail mezzanine area.
At the presentation Sheriff Wren (presenting) described a morning incident in which a detainee tied a bedsheet to the mezzanine railing and attempted to hang himself. Deputies on the scene responded immediately, cut the detainee down and administered CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED). Sheriff Wren said, “Due to the prompt, professional, and proficient efforts displayed by these deputies, the detainee is still alive today.”
Sheriff Wren named the deputies and sergeants involved, including Sergeant Stabler and Deputies Cutsley, Patel, Tatum, Schaefer, Sanchez and Deputy Botello, and said Deputy Botello and Deputy Tatum performed the cut-down. The board presented life-saving pins and a certificate of appreciation; Sheriff Wren indicated pins would be worn on class A uniforms and that photos would be taken in the hallway for the board’s records.
Commissioners thanked the sheriff’s office and recognized the deputies’ actions as an example of the department’s day-to-day professionalism. The board paused formal business to present pins and brief remarks.
