County maintenance reports HVAC fixes, probation-office remodel and new vendor for facility mats

Dirk, maintenance staff for Newaygo County, told the Physical and Economic Development Committee on March 5 that crews completed a series of repairs and upgrades at county facilities, and that one building remodel will be marked with an open house next week.
The maintenance update said Vanguard performed fire-alarm inspections at the health department and a kitchen-system inspection at the jail. Staff replaced a crash bar on an exterior administration door, installed a garage-door opener gear kit on the north side of the maintenance building, and changed an exterior lock set on a service door, the report said. “We replaced the toilet in a 11 cell at the jail,” Dirk said. He also reported multiple vacuum-breaker replacements, door repairs at the Council on Aging, and repairs to a district court date/time stamper machine.
Dirk described HVAC troubleshooting at multiple sites. He said an air-damper control harness was replaced on RTU 4 at the courthouse and that a thermostat probe at the jail was replaced; staff also moved thermostats in the treasurer’s office and courthouse to improve room-temperature readings sent to the units. Dirk said some units required warranty work: “It was the main board [on that unit] that was bad,” he said of an RTU that did not communicate properly with its damper control. He called the on-site troubleshooting a learning opportunity and noted the work took place in adverse weather.
Staff are also pursuing ductwork work at the DBH facility; Dirk said Orchard Hills provided one quote and the county is waiting on at least one more estimate. He added that duct cleaning for that building will appear in finance. Regarding inspections, Dirk said hood inspections are performed annually and that Vanguard will inspect quarterly as required for certain equipment.
The county recently switched floor-mat services to a new vendor, SimTas, which Dirk said should reduce wear and tear on new carpets. He also reported the final walk-through for the probation-office remodel was complete and that staff were “very satisfied” with the result; an open house was scheduled for Thursday next week from 12 to 3 p.m. Dirk invited committee members to tour the remodel earlier if they wished.
Committee members thanked Dirk and his crew for snow removal and general building maintenance. No formal committee action was taken on the maintenance report during the meeting.
