Veterans office highlights training, Hope 101 expansion and steady service levels

Steven Kane, a staff member in the county Veterans Affairs office, told the Newaygo County Health, Education & Human Services Committee that staff completed a one-day training on the veterans benefits management system and that additional training is scheduled for Feb. 13 in Grand Rapids.
The training, Kane said, helps the office track veterans— claims and payments and "get results quicker" and more accurate outcomes for veterans seeking benefits. He said Service Officer Ball and McKinley will attend the state training and that the office will remain open during the session.
Kane updated the committee on local transitional housing: Hope 101 is conducting a construction project to add four studio apartments in White Cloud to increase capacity. He described availability as the central limit on how many veterans the program can serve and cited a recent success: a veteran who spent six months in the program secured employment and permanent housing after participation.
Committee members thanked Kane and noted the value of keeping staff trained. Kane said the Veterans Affairs office continues daily service to veterans and that most activity is routine casework rather than large new programs.
The committee did not take formal action on Kane—s report.
