City accepts $107,600 Transportation Alternatives Program grant to add pedestrian islands on River Drive

The Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 18 to accept $107,600 in Transportation Alternatives Program funding from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for pedestrian island improvements on River Drive and Riverview Drive.
City staff said the project will add pedestrian islands at crossings near College Street and Center Street to improve safety and to better link downtown restaurants and the park. "We’re really excited about this project...this will help connect pedestrians who are going to a restaurant to the park," a commissioner said during discussion.
The grant requires a 20% local match of $26,900, which staff said brings the total project cost to approximately $134,500. Staff previously applied for a smaller amount and informed the board the state offered additional funds. The commissioners voted unanimously present to accept the grant and authorize staff to proceed with the grant application and associated match.
City staff present at the meeting said project engineers are available to answer technical questions and that design and construction scheduling details will be presented in subsequent staff reports.
