Commissioners accept candidate pool and broaden tenant-rep criteria for Strategic Housing Finance board

Travis County Commissioners Court on Feb. 11 voted unanimously to accept four timely and late applications for a vacancy on the Strategic Housing Finance Corporation board and to open a recruitment for a tenant representative with amended solicitation language.
Julie Wheeler, the county’s intergovernmental relations officer, told the court that the county received three on-time applications and one late application for a non-tenant vacancy and recommended all four be accepted into the candidate pool. She also asked the court to approve revised language for tenant representative recruitment that would allow applicants who are current or former residents of an affordable housing property in which Strategic Housing Finance has an ownership interest, even if that ownership is a small percentage.
Wheeler said the corporation’s ownership structure has changed since earlier rules were drafted and that most deals now involve small ownership stakes ("about, like, a 1% or less ownership stake," she said), so the adjusted language would broaden the candidate pool. She said the county and Strategic Housing Finance have discussed the language with the Austin Housing Authority (BOSTA) for inclusiveness, and staff will finalize solicitation language and post the tenant-rep call through March 14.
Commissioner Howard moved approval to accept all four candidates for interviews and to open the tenant-rep call with the added language; Commissioner Shea seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Wheeler said interviews for the non-tenant vacancy will be scheduled soon and the county will share candidate information with commissioners’ offices.
