Columbia County approves revised environmental health job descriptions and opens recruitment

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners on March 12 approved revised job descriptions for Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) I and II and opened recruitment for an EHS II position with the option to underfill as an EHS I. Jerry Walker, assistant director of public health, presented the revisions and explained they clarify timelines and experience expectations for the classifications.
Walker said the revisions strengthen language around education and experience timelines and add specific expectations such as a two‑year timeline for trainee progression for EHS II and reference to four years of progressive experience in certain duties. He also said the county currently uses an in‑county trainee supervised by outside EHS‑level staff and sometimes relies on outside contractors for higher‑level work; hiring an EHS II would increase in‑county capacity.
The motion to approve the revised job descriptions passed by voice vote (three ayes, none opposed). The subsequent motion to open recruitment for an Environmental Health Specialist II with the option to underfill as an Environmental Health Specialist I also passed by voice vote (three ayes, none opposed).
