Commissioners approve letter supporting HB 3175 to modernize public land corner preservation

Columbia County commissioners voted on Feb. 5 to approve and send a letter of support for House Bill 3175, a proposal to modernize the public land corner preservation program. The measure was brought to the board's attention by the county surveyor, Nathan Woodward, and is supported by the Oregon Association of County Surveyors and Engineers.
"It is asking to change something that was legislated 40 years ago," a commissioner said during the discussion, noting periodic updates to long-standing statutes can be appropriate.
Commissioners discussed the possibility of providing testimony in addition to the letter of support at the bill's hearing, scheduled for Feb. 11. The board made a formal motion to approve the letter and recorded a voice vote in favor.
