Board honors staff and students with Extra Mile and Golden Apple awards

At the March 12 meeting the Wicomico County Board of Education recognized staff across the district with Extra Mile awards and presented the superintendent's Golden Apple to a sixth-grade student for quick action during a classroom medical incident.
Paul Butler and the superintendent called staff to the front to recognize multiple employees for January and February. Honorees included Christine Cook (testing coordinator, James M. Bennett), Cynthia Laughlin (custodian, North Salisbury), Enam Solly (special education instructional assistant, Pinehurst Elementary), Andre Cartwright (custodial staff, East Salisbury), Allison Cornish (CTE teacher and SkillsUSA coordinator, Parkside), and James Hessen (pupil personnel worker, Fruitland Primary/Intermediate). Presenters described specific contributions such as organizing testing accommodations, maintaining facilities, supporting IEP goals and coordinating career-technical education programs.
Superintendent Stauffer presented the Golden Apple Award to sixth-grader Nasir DeShields of Salisbury Middle School for calling the nurse and assisting a teacher who was choking in a portable classroom. The superintendent praised Nasir for "bravery, presence of mind, and willingness to step up on a moment of crisis." The award was given in front of the board and audience.
Board members and the superintendent thanked student representatives for attending and noted their participation in recent events, including representation at the county budget hearing.
