Board approves AP African American Studies course for expanded rollout in fall

After a February work session and pilot, the board gave final approval for an AP African American Studies course to expand to additional high schools this fall.
The Wicomico County Board of Education voted March 12 to approve an Advanced Placement African American Studies course for use in high schools across the district.
Chief Academic Officer Dr. Briggs thanked the teacher pilot team — including a James M. Bennett High School teacher (Ms. Thompson), the social studies supervisor (Ms. Bach) and the social studies coach (Mr. Portier) — for leading the pilot and preparing materials. Dr. Briggs said the pilot leadership had been “instrumental in bringing this opportunity to our students.”
The board had reached consensus at a February work session to forward the recommendation to the March meeting for final approval. The motion to approve the course passed unanimously by voice and roll-call votes: Mr. Palmer, Mrs. Hazel, Mr. Platts, Mrs. Beecham, Mr. Brown, Dr. Ennis and Chair Malone all voted in favor.
Dr. Briggs said the district plans to expand the course to additional high schools in the fall and thanked the board for its engagement during the pilot and review process.
