Grants Pass SD 7 board debates library-materials policy, public-review window and staff protections

Grants Pass School District 7 board members and district staff spent the bulk of their March 4 work session reviewing a draft policy on classroom and school library materials, debating how materials should be selected, how much public notice parents should receive before newly acquired items become available to students, and whether the policy’s discipline language could create unintended consequences for librarians and teachers.

The discussion centered on three practical points: use of uniform selection criteria for all instructional and supplemental materials; a publicly posted review period (members debated 5, 14, 30 and 60 days) before new items are made available for student use; and administrative regulations (ARs) that staff would draft to handle purchasing, exceptions and reconsideration procedures. District staff and librarians urged clarity and said the administrative process should account for different purchasing workflows such as bulk orders and scholastic book fairs.
