Bullitt County Schools hear construction update; contractors request 14-day athletics delay

Ward said two change orders on the agenda would replace a nonfunctional coiling door at a concession stand and return credits for unused allowances (for asbestos testing, site electrical and soil stabilization). She described a masonry credit of about $14,000 at band and chorus rooms that was replaced by framed chipboard vetted by an acoustic designer to achieve required noise isolation, and she said that approach was more cost‑effective than extended masonry and steel work.
Ward described a request from Calhoun Construction for a 14‑day, no‑cost time extension tied to wet weather and winter storms; she said the new substantial completion date tied to that change order would be Feb. 14, 2025. She also said the district was discussing time extensions with other contractors, including Motes Group and Toadvine Construction, because the contractors’ schedules interrelate (for example, slabs must be placed before bleachers can be installed).
Other items noted in the update: a geothermal field repair priced at $1,100 after it was clipped during site electrical work; an additional steel beam at the North Bullitt Fieldhouse opening priced at $5,400; and pricing to add turf to a second batting cage and a double batting cage at Bullitt Central. Ward said punch lists remain for Trane building‑automation work and for other finishing items; roofing, painting and landscaping work is planned as weather allows.
On athletics scheduling, Ward said teams cannot begin formal practice until Feb. 15 under KHSAA rules, so the district has “a little bit of time,” but she warned North Bullitt and Bullitt East could face tight timelines for practice and early season home contests and that staff are developing contingency locations and plans if fields are not ready.
Ward asked the board to allow the superintendent and design team to approve limited time extensions for contractors, when needed between board meetings, with formal ratification to follow at the next board work session. She said staff would notify board members before any action and would formally add the ratification to the agenda at the next meeting.
The district continues punch‑list work at Bernheim Middle School and progress at Bullitt East and Bullitt Central as weather permits. Ward said roof warranty inspections and exterior punch lists will begin as snow melts and landscaping will be completed when conditions allow.
The board will consider the listed change orders and any formal time‑extension requests at upcoming meetings; Ward said staff will bring any ratifications back to a future agenda for formal board action.
