Board advances turf work for baseball, turf addition for softball after lengthy facilities discussion

District staff outlined a two-part plan: a base bid to replace turf on the baseball field and an alternate to add turf at the softball site. The administration also recommended a separate dirt-work contract to prepare the softball subgrade. Staff said dirt work could begin in March and that turf installation would follow a schedule coordinated with athletic seasons.
Board members debated who should be allowed to use newly turfed facilities and whether community groups that regularly use fields should pay. Several board members said they support community use but suggested charging organized teams that cause repeated wear (for example travel teams that practice multiple times per week) while keeping casual community access open. The board also discussed cleat rules, lighting usage and the life-cycle maintenance of synthetic turf; one member relayed community concerns about microplastics and preferred natural grass.
Administration said improved turf could reduce day-to-day maintenance time spent by district staff while improving playability and reducing weather-related cancellations. The board asked staff to return with bid tabulations and a proposed facility-use agreement so the district can manage wear, fees and access once turf is installed.
