Board approves summer employment program, summer-school calendar change and facility bids

The Odessa R-VII Board of Education on a series of routine motions approved a six-week paid summer employment program for juniors and seniors on IEPs or 504 plans, moved the July 2025 board meeting one week later, and advanced recommendation packages related to athletics fields and summer school.
Board members said the moves were intended to support students and to give district staff time to close out the fiscal year. The motions passed by voice vote after brief discussion; the transcript records assent but does not list individual roll-call tallies.
The board approved a Firefly employment program that will place eligible juniors and seniors with job coaches over the summer, with the vendor paying coaches, student wages and insurance. District staff described the program as a six-week, paid work experience overseen by a district-assigned coach; the vendor provides job-coach training and supervision.
Board members also approved the administration’s recommendation to shift the regular July meeting from the second Tuesday to the third Tuesday (July 15, 2025) to allow the business office additional time to close the fiscal year.
Separately, the board advanced contracting steps for baseball and softball field work (grading and installing synthetic turf on the baseball field and adding turf at the softball site) and approved the district’s proposed summer school calendar (20 instructional days beginning the week after Memorial Day, with a target start of May 28 and a June 25 end date for a 60-hour session). A motion related to switching the district internet provider from CenturyLink to Socket (a three-year, E-rate-eligible contract) was noted as already approved in the consent package.
The board also recorded the committee recommendation to retain a challenged library book and approved that recommendation as presented.
