The boardroom move, Viking Hall renovations and a projected new football field were the focus of a facilities update that included a status report and questions about the district’s next steps for a facilities master plan.
Jossy Haynes, presenting on behalf of the construction manager (identified in the presentation as KER; the name was also spoken as KAI during the meeting), said the Bell Ridge bus lot improvements and the new boardroom are on schedule for completion this quarter and that the boardroom move is planned for April. Haynes reported the overall project was about 85% complete and that the district is tracking approximately $2,000,000 in Prop B savings for the project to date. She also said audio-visual installations had begun and that a punch-walk was scheduled.
Nut graf: Board members used the update to press for a clear, itemized budget and a transparent procurement plan for a facilities master plan; the presenter and directors agreed a separate scope and additional funds will be required beyond the current construction-management contract.
Haynes outlined next steps: Viking Hall interior cosmetic upgrades (including required restroom ADA work), concession and press-box improvements, and a planned contractor kickoff for the track and field (Vernon Jones named as the selected track contractor). Haynes said work on the football field is scheduled to be complete for the upcoming school year weather permitting.
Directors asked whether the KER/KAI contract covered the facilities master plan. Haynes replied the current contract covers construction management for the projects presented but does not include full facilities-plan development; she said a separate scope and additional funding would be needed. Director Milton Roberts and others asked for an itemized budget for the facilities plan and for clarity on whether the district will use an RFP to select outside firms; Haynes said the plan is to begin stakeholder meetings in late second quarter or early third quarter and then determine required specialties and procurement steps.
Ending: The board directed administration and the construction manager to return with a clear facilities-plan scope, an itemized budget and a proposed procurement/RFP timeline before the board moves toward bond or capital decisions.
