The HANNIBAL 60 School Board voted 4–1 to create and fill a director of curriculum position, a new administrative role the district said will lead curriculum alignment across elementary schools, support preparation for the Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) cycle, and coordinate academic work related to the Innovation Campus.
An unnamed district administrator who presented the item said the position would be placed on the administrative salary schedule and described a likely salary "close to around $100,000 in that range," dependent on qualifications. The presenter said the district recommends the role be titled a director (not an assistant superintendent) and that candidates have a minimum of five years of teaching experience. The presenter said the role is essential to ensure consistent, districtwide curriculum and to prepare for MSIP work in the 2026–27 cycle.
Board members debated timing and optics. One board member argued the district could defer hiring and have existing staff prepare curriculum materials over the coming months so a new hire could start with groundwork completed, while others said the district needs direct leadership to avoid continued piecemeal coverage. Concerns were raised that moving internal staff into the new role could create downstream staffing gaps; presenters replied many of the moves would be reassignments rather than new full-time-equivalent additions and that some shifts are cost neutral.
A motion to create and fill the director position passed with four affirmative votes and one dissent. The board recorded that the position could begin around the new fiscal year and that salary placement will be determined using the administrative salary schedule and candidate qualifications. Presenters said the earliest start date would likely align with the district's budget calendar, with a new hire potentially starting July 1 following budget adoption.
The presenter added that consolidation work includes reviewing subscriptions and curriculum resources to reduce duplicated purchases and achieve recurring savings by purchasing district-wide licenses. The board directed staff to continue monitoring budget impacts, insurance cost changes, and the state budget process in Jefferson City that could affect district revenues.
