February sales tax receipts beat plan; municipalities unlikely to get supplemental payment

Orange County finance staff reported a stronger-than-expected February sales tax payment Wednesday, but said earlier municipal payouts will not get a supplemental adjustment.
A finance presenter said county sales-tax receipts for February were $168,682.50 over plan, or about 0.06% above projections; staff characterized the result as a rebound after several months trending under plan. The presenter said December receipts performed “very well” and helped bring the month-to-month numbers into positive territory.
The presenter explained municipalities are paid on a cash basis with a municipal calendar that runs Feb. 1 through Jan. 31. For the January distribution cycle municipalities were at 98.78% of plan and therefore will not receive a supplemental payment for that period; however, the February receipts will apply to 2025 distributions and staff said the first 2025 municipal payments should be larger than last year’s if trends hold.
Ending Finance staff said they will continue to monitor receipts and report distributions as the year progresses.
