Beaverton SD 48J negotiators proposed expanding the district's tuition-reimbursement language to explicitly include noncredit classes and certification fees.
The district explained the change would allow employees to use tuition reimbursement for free training paired with a paid certification exam or similar costs that currently fall outside credit-bearing coursework. "There are some classes or certifications that people would like to take for operational kinds of departments ... where the training is free, but the certification requires a test," a district presenter said.
The proposal is intended to aid employees in fields such as technology and paraeducator certification where testing requirements and test vendors may change over time. Presenters gave the example of paraeducator certification tests (ParaPro or future equivalents) and said including certifications would prevent a future training/test mismatch from disqualifying employees from reimbursement.
Union negotiators said the change made sense for paraeducator pathways; both sides agreed to keep discussing the article and some parties said they would sign language-only edits elsewhere in the contract during the session.
