EEAC members report school events, budget meeting participation and student activities during March meeting

Members of the Education Equity Advisory Committee opened the March 3 meeting with a round of brief share-outs about recent school and district activities.
Henry reported that Tigard-Tualatin School District budget meetings had been well attended and that community members, including parents, were providing substantive input. Lisa Jones said she attended the Fowler Middle School spelling bee and estimated first-place ($100), second ($50) and third ($30) prizes though she said she might be unsure of the exact amounts. Moss and Henry both said budget committee meetings felt more interactive this year. Moss also reported on a recent unity week at a school that featured assemblies and cultural performances.
Nina and Octavia described family engagement and cultural events: Nina is organizing Bridgeport’s Pacific Islander family engagement night in April in partnership with Byram Elementary, Tualatin Elementary and Tualatin High School’s Pacifica group; she also confirmed Bridgeport will hold its multicultural night the following Thursday. Octavia attended a student “voices” assembly at Taggart and described it as moving; she said district leadership attended and that materials (a PowerPoint) could be shared with the committee.
Olivia, a student committee member, reported on student activities: as co-president of Tualatin’s feminism club she described Women’s History Month events (a 30-foot banner with student handprints, lunch-time activities, a planned event with women athletes) and she said the Youth Advisory Council will host a Youthline stress-management workshop March 30 expected to serve about 40 young people.
Barb (an elementary teacher) said her staff have completed the ISH training during staff meetings and that instructional assistants will receive the training; she described the training as informative about processes and procedures. The chair reported that an annual report subcommittee (including Nina, Barb and the chair) had met and planned to reconvene in April to prepare the full report. The chair asked committee members to confirm they had completed the bias-incident/hate-speech (ISH) training the chair circulated on Jan. 28; several members confirmed completion or that training was scheduled for staff meetings.
Members used the roundtable to surface items for possible follow-up: clarifying whether after-school programs supported by foundation funding include transportation, ensuring schools include hate-incident data in THEIR EACH plan submissions, and documenting evidence of impact from school lessons and family feedback. The committee then moved into the SIP/EACH training portion of the agenda.
