Tigard-Tualatin honors classified employees and approves Classified Appreciation Week resolution

The recognition and the resolution were bundled early in the meeting. The district presented the Bev Farnsworth Excellence of Service Award and named a head secretary, Amanda Thorsen of Walton Elementary, as this year’s Bev Farnsworth Award recipient. The board then voted to approve Resolution 24-25-08, Classified Appreciation Week, with a voice vote after a motion from Director Zershmeid and a second from Director Miles.
Bev Farnsworth was described during the presentation as “an incredible secretary at Byram Elementary School, who was known for her ability to build community and connect in genuine ways with students, staff, families, and community members.” Lisa Burton (presenter) read the nominations and asked each recipient to come forward. The district listed awardees from multiple schools and departments, including Delbert Bridal (Alberta Bridal Elementary), Jackie Arroyo (Art Rutkin Elementary), Michelle Smith (Bridgeport Elementary), Takumbo Okadara (Byram Elementary), Haley Day (Nutrition Services), Matt Younger (Operations), Cheryl Weiss (Transportation), and Gabby Oliveras (Tigard-Tualatin Virtual Academy), among others.
Superintendent (name not specified) praised classified staff as “the heartbeat of our schools,” saying their “dedication is just truly invaluable.” The superintendent noted the district is presenting small tokens dated 02/2025 and acknowledged a local sponsor, Humble Pie Baking Company, which donated pies for the recipients.
Action: Director Zershmeid moved to approve Resolution 24-25-08, Classified Appreciation Week; Director Miles seconded. The board approved the resolution by voice vote. No roll-call tally was read into the record.
The board said it will also include the resolution in upcoming board communications and encouraged community members to read the resolution to learn more about the district’s acknowledgements of classified staff.
