Rockwood R-VI held its Board of Education awards ceremony at Rockwood Summit High School during the board meeting, where district leaders presented awards recognizing student and staff accomplishments across academics, arts and athletics.
The ceremony highlighted state- and national-level recognitions: students from the district were named U.S. Presidential Scholars candidates and National Merit Scholarship finalists; several students earned All-State honors in band, orchestra and sports; and school teams placed in state and national competitions. Officials also announced four Rockwood schools named Missouri Schools of Character.
Why it matters: the ceremony spotlights student achievement that the district says reflects both classroom programs and extracurricular opportunities, and it publicly recognizes staff and schools that received statewide awards.
District and school leaders presented a range of awards. Presenters named students who are candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program and listed National Merit finalists across the district’s four high schools. Student accomplishments announced included All-State honors in band, orchestra and choir; state placings in swimming and diving and wrestling; and recognition in statewide art and film exhibits. Several student teams were honored for placing in regional and national competitions, including a first Lego League team advancing to an international championship and a CyberPatriot first-place finish in the silver tier for one Marquette team.
Individual and team recognitions announced during the ceremony included the following (selection based on presenters' remarks): Presidential Scholars candidates from the district’s high schools; National Merit Scholarship finalists; All-State musicians and athletes; and competition placings for robotics, cyber defense and dance teams. District staff and volunteers also received awards: district school leaders named Babler Elementary, Crestview Middle, Ridge Meadows Elementary and Selvidge Middle as Missouri Schools of Character; administrative and coaching awards were presented to staff recognized by state associations.
Several principals and district administrators introduced award recipients and provided brief backgrounds on honorees. Presenters named newly approved administrative hires earlier in the meeting (see separate board actions): Aaron Cook (principal, Kellison Elementary), David Beck (assistant principal, Lafayette High School), Derek Gilsdorf (assistant principal, Rockwood Valley Middle School), Eric Neiman (director of facilities), and Catherine Jacob (administrative intern at the Center for Creative Learning).
The ceremony included student-produced videos and thank-you notes read for the board; a reception for honorees and guests was held after the program. The board adjourned following the awards portion of the meeting.
Notable presenters and speakers identified in the record include: Mary Lepack, chief communications officer for Rockwood; a district official identified in the record as Dr. Kane (title not specified in the transcript); board president Lynn Midgette; and principals and school leaders who introduced student recipients.
