Volunteer Mask and Mirror theater asks Tigard for continued grant support and a permanent home as costs rise

Leaders of Mask and Mirror Community Theater told Tigard City Council their volunteer company faces rising costs and would welcome continued city grant support and help identifying a permanent venue.
John Bartholomew and Rick Hoover said Mask and Mirror stages three main productions a year at Rise Church, plus two smaller "unmasked" shows in Tualatin. Bartholomew said the company has presented more than 50 productions over 14 seasons and estimates total season expenses approach $35,000.
Hoover told the council the church increased the company’s production fee from $2,000 to $4,000 per production. "Last year, they came up and said, we've been really nice about this, but we are doubling the cost," he said, describing the rent increase and rising costs for sets, costumes, props and advertising.
The troupe emphasized affordable ticket pricing — $10 youth, $15 for some shows and $20 full price — and said raising prices significantly would risk audience size. The company is exploring grant sources and asked the city to consider whether a municipal building might provide a more stable home than the church, which occasionally limits access because of other programs.
Councilors commended the troupe. Staff noted Mask and Mirror applies for Tigard grants and other local arts funding and that the company draws volunteers and patrons from Tigard and the wider region. Mask and Mirror confirmed upcoming productions and provided its website for tickets.
