County moves to tighten security at Government Office Building using ARPA interest earnings

Chautauqua County legislators authorized an amendment to the 2025 budget to implement security enhancements at the Government Office Building (GOB) using interest earned on American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
County Executive PJ Wendell and Public Facilities staff said the measures include targeted access control points, visible door enhancements and other improvements modeled on prior work at the county’s Human Resources Center. Officials said the upgrades are intended to improve staff and visitor safety without creating a fortress‑like environment and that the work will proceed immediately after approval.
“We want to be able to put a little bit of access control...and make sure people...are going the proper ways and safe in doing so,” a county official said, citing a small number of isolated incidents and the high public profile of an ongoing trial in the county courthouse as reasons to accelerate the work.
The committee approved the budget amendment; staff will bring procurement and implementation details to the committee as projects are scoped.
