Public Defender's office to expand Dunkirk lease; state funding to cover rent increase

The Audit and Control Committee approved an amendment to the Public Defender’s office lease in the City of Dunkirk to add 664 square feet, increasing total leased space to 1,439 square feet.
Derek Gregory, assistant public defender speaking for Chief Public Defender (Mr. Barone), said the additional space will accommodate staff growth tied to state‑funded positions assigned to Dunkirk. The current lease covers 775 square feet; under the amendment the rent rises from $1,150 per month to $2,150 per month for an annual total of $25,800. The price per square foot remains unchanged, Gregory said, and the New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services has indicated it will fund the increase, so no local cost is expected.
Committee members asked about furniture, IT drops and timing; Gregory said the office has budgeted for equipment and will work with IT and Public Facilities to install data drops. The resolution was approved by voice vote.
