Columbia County committee members approved two workforce items intended to expand youth employment and vocational training.
The committee granted permission to continue the county apprenticeship arrangement with Questar; staff said two youths were interested in shadowing and that a previous participant who started last year intends to join county employment after graduation. The item was moved and approved by voice vote.
Separately, the committee approved the county's summer youth employment program for the upcoming season with the same guidelines as prior years: 12 positions, pay set at $17.25 an hour, and the work period running from Memorial Day through the Friday before Labor Day.
Why it matters: staff described the apprenticeship as a pathway to county employment for students and the seasonal program as a recurring workforce opportunity for local youth.
What's next: staff will coordinate interviews and hiring under the approved program guidelines.
