County accepts $5.75 million HUD lead‑hazard grant to remediate residential hazards

Chautauqua County accepted a multi‑year lead hazard remediation grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development totaling $5,750,000.
Jessica Wirsley, director of Environmental Health Services, presented the award to the Audit and Control Committee and said the federal grant will fund lead hazard remediation work across private residences in the county. The grant performance period extends through the early part of 2029, county officials said.
“We got $5,750,000, to assist homes with remediating lead hazards,” Wirsley told the committee. She said the award is intended to support removal and abatement activities to reduce lead exposure risks in households.
The committee voted to accept the grant; the vote was recorded as carried by voice vote.
