Chair Leroy Tice told trustees that Dr. Marlene Saunders has been hospitalized and is now in the rehabilitation division at Wilmington Hospital. Tice said he visited Saunders on Saturday, delivered flowers on behalf of the board and administration, and reported that she “was able to tell me how to conduct this meeting and give me and gave me some information to send back to the football coach as to how to build this program.” Tice said Saunders had a gastric complication after an initial event but is rehabbing and “looks like she will probably meet her goal, which is to walk out of there with any assistive devices, in the near term.”
Tice also reported that Representative Selby Parker had a neuro incident described in the meeting as a stroke and that “she is out of the hospital.” Trustees who spoke confirmed they had received recent updates from family or colleagues.
The chair read the board’s announcements for upcoming meetings: Committee meetings day 1 is scheduled for March 6 (athletics; student affairs; academic and student success; innovation and sustainability; governance); Committee meetings day 2 is scheduled for March 20 (audit; operations; executive leadership); and the full board meeting is scheduled for March 27. The board also noted commencement is scheduled for a Friday in March (exact date not specified on the public record).
Tice said the board is soliciting recommendations to fill a vacancy in the Sussex County seat created by John Allen’s departure and noted that an email had been circulated from general counsel and Trustee Norman Griffiths seeking nominees. The announcements were made before the board moved into executive session on a personnel matter.
