James A. LaCour, American Legion National Commander, told members he recently testified before Congress and praised Delaware’s work on veterans’ issues. "The current military and veterans residing in the great state of Delaware are worth every honor, every benefit, every accolade that this state can bestow upon them," LaCour said, and urged lawmakers to back approaches that could prevent veteran suicide.
Representative Holofsky urged legislation to strengthen veterans' services, identifying House Bill 1 as a vehicle to create a cabinet-level position focused on veterans. "House bill 1 is for a cabinet secretary. In order to get the veterans the benefits that they have earned, we certainly would like to have somebody at the seat, a seat of power," Holofsky said. Representative Carson, also a veteran, said the goal was to "make every day Veterans Day" and thanked members and guests for attending.
LaCour described recent visits to Dover-area military units and the VA Medical Center and expressed the American Legion's readiness to assist state leaders on veterans issues. His remarks followed floor recognition of veterans and preceded separate ceremonial resolutions honoring individual veterans.
