The Peabody City Council’s Industrial and Community Development Committee met March 13 to discuss accessory dwelling unit (ADU) zoning language that follows a state law enacted earlier. Councilors reviewed example language from Community Development and the state’s model zoning and directed staff to draft more restrictive local language.
Councilor Peach said Community Development staff, led by Mr. Bellavance, will work from the state model to prepare clearer ordinance text. Councilors raised questions about the scope of ADUs, potential effects on existing filaments and short-term rentals and generally favored a stricter approach that would allow challenges where needed.
Peach said he expects Community Development to return with proposed language within about a month so the city can meet the state timeline following the law’s effective date of Feb. 2. No ordinance was adopted at the meeting; this was a committee-level discussion and staff-direction item.
