Council refers Center School annex health inspection report to joint city–school committee

The Peabody City Council on March 13 voted to receive the health-inspection report for the Center School annex — the facility that currently houses the integrated preschool — and to refer the matter to the ad hoc joint city council and school committee for further review.
Councilor Peach, who brought the item forward, said Community Development and the health department had completed a review and that the city expects more detailed language for next steps from staff. He and other councilors said they want the joint committee to stay active on remedial steps and to receive follow-up reports.
Council discussion included the scheduling of a public community meeting for March 19 at Higgins Middle School’s auditorium; PVD TV will broadcast the meeting, though the city said there will be no remote participation option. Councilor Manning Martin said the mayor indicated a plan to reopen the annex in September and thanked health department staff for thorough inspections and an action plan.
The council amended the motion to specifically refer the health-inspection report to the joint city council–school committee and approved the amended motion by voice vote. Councilors encouraged families and staff to attend the March 19 community meeting and to direct questions to council contacts and school committee members.
