The Tumwater Civil Service Commission approved multiple eligibility lists and a job-description update during its meeting, moving several hiring and classification items forward.
The commission approved an eligibility list for fire training lieutenant that includes Jared Simmons with an exam score of 80%; the list extends through March 2026. Commissioners accepted the entry-level firefighter list, which added 29 candidates, and the police officer entry-level list containing 25 candidates. The commission also approved a police sergeant eligibility list that includes Rachel Johnson, Peter Navarro and Danielle Dawson.
Commissioners also approved a revised class specification for the Police Services Specialist 1 position. The updated job description removes evidence-management duties (now assigned to a separate police evidence technician position created in 2020) and clarifies current administrative responsibilities such as managing public disclosure requests, warrants, civil orders, and records retention. Human resources confirmed the update changes only the job description and does not change salary banding.
Tumwater Fire Chief Brian Hurley and police department staff noted strong recruiting results. “We’re pretty excited about the depth of the list,” Hurley said while presenting the fire lists. Commissioners congratulated staff on recruiting and noted the entry-level lists will be used to fill upcoming vacancies, including a paramedic unit scheduled to enter service in January 2026 in partnership with Thurston County Medic 1.
Most of the motions to approve the lists passed with unanimous ayes recorded during the meeting. Several votes were routine approvals of eligibility lists; the commission did not change advertised scoring weights or hiring rules when approving the lists and the class-spec update.
The commission’s next regular meeting was announced for April 10. Commissioners directed staff to proceed with hiring steps consistent with the approved lists and the department’s staffing plans.
